Ecological
Corridor
As before,
a major feature of the scheme
will be the creation of new
habitats and an ecological
corridor along Chitlings Brook. This
area cannot currently
be accessed by the local
community, but we want it
to become a lasting
legacy for local people to
enjoy.
The brook – which is currently
overgrown and dilapidated – will
provide new habitats
for wildlife, encourage biodiversity
and become part of Sideway’s
sustainable
drainage strategy. Once it
has been opened up, it will
become a pleasant spot for
walking and wildlife watching.
Controlled access to the
ecological areas of the site
(with appropriate security
measures and clear signage)
will allow them to become
a real resource and an educational
asset for local schools.
We propose to:
Increase areas of wetland habitat with ditches and water retention features
-
Improve water quality and establish vegetation where possible
Create a woodland belt by planting semi-mature specimens of native species
Remove Japanese Knotweed from the site
Enhance existing hedgerows with a mix of native species
Remove any invasive grass species and re-seed to encourage a new habitat for
invertebrates, amphibians, birds and small mammals
Implement the Staffordshire Biodiversity Action Plan for mammal species
and habitat – and protect the Great Crested Newt
